TYPES OF HEARING AIDS
- BTE - BEHIND THE EAR - This type of hearing aid is large and noticeable. I rarely fit them any longer as almost all hearing losses can be fit with receiver in the canal (RIC) instruments.
- OPEN FIT - A form of small behind the ear (BTE) hearing aid which I rarely fit anymore.
- ITE - IN THE EAR - A large in the ear hearing aid that is very visible and can be used for mild to severe hearing loss.
- MICRO CANAL - One of the smallest of hearing aids available on the market today which require good dexterity on the part of the user. Not suitable for moderate to severe hearing loss.
- CIC - COMPLETELY IN THE CANAL - Although not as small as the micro canal, this form of hearing aid hides in the ear canal. It also requires good dexterity on the part of the user.
- CANAL AID - Easier to handle than the CIC as it is larger in size and can be used for mild to severe hearing loss. Not as discrete as the CIC or receiver in canal (RIC).
- RIC - RECEIVER IN CANAL - This is the most popular hearing aid fit today because of its small size and flexibility. It is almost invisible on most users. Available in battery operated and rechargeable models.
Given my 37 years experience in hearing aid practice, I feel the best aid that is flexible enough to fit almost all hearing losses and which is discrete due to its small size is the RIC hearing aid.
